Oval silver medal; the face with the half-length figure of a nurse bandaging the head of a wounded soldier, inscribed ‘POUR NOS BLESSES’ (for our wounded), signed ‘O. YENCESSE’ (for the French Symbolist sculptor and medallist Ovide Yencesse, 1869-1947,  the reverse inscribed ‘LE DEVOIR’ (Duty) and dated ‘1914-1915’ above a Geneva cross, circumscribed ‘AUX INFIRMIÈRES DE FRANCE’ (to the Nurses of France); height 28mm (1.1 inches); age-toned;

Although this medal may well have been awarded to nurses for devotion to tending the war-wounded, its form suggest to us that it may possibly have been produced for a fund-raising ‘journée’ in 1915 and given to those who made significant donations. Further information would be welcomed. An unusual medal that we have not seen before.
