Gülhane Military Medical Academy (GMMA) is the supreme consulting organ of the Turkish Armed Forces in the field of medical sciences. Gülhane provides health care and training on graduate and post-graduate levels and conducts scientific researches and publications. Medical students, medical doctors, and other auxiliary medical personnel, needed by the Turkish Armed Forces, are educated and/or trained at GMMA. Institutes, faculties, training hospitals, and other training and educational institutions are incorporated in GMMA. GMMA is an educational institution that holds scientific autonomy.

In Turkey, modern medical training started with the inauguration of the Military School of Medicine on March 14, 1827. Later on, in 1866, the Civilian School of Medicine was established. In order to standardize modern hospital management, to provide post-graduate education for medical doctors, and to educate military medical personnel, Gülhane Clinical Training Hospital was founded on December 30, 1898, in Istanbul. In 1941 Gülhane was transferred to Ankara, and in 1957 acquired the title of Academy.

It was in 1971 that Gülhane started its activities at present modern premises in Etlik, Ankara.

Gülhane contributed a great deal to the establishment of the Medical Schools of the Universities of Istanbul and Ankara, in 1909 and 1945 respectively. In 1980, the Military Faculty of Medicine was established and incorporated into GMMA.
