Resulting from the developments that were witnessed with the Firman of Reform (Tanzimat Fermanı) the first Postal Organization was established as the Ministry on October 23, 1840 for the purpose of satisfying the postal needs of all people of the Ottoman Empire and of aliens. In 1909 it was turned into the Ministry of Post, Telegraph and Telephone. With the separation of telecommunication and postal services on April 24, 1995, the Directorate started to serve as General Directorate of PTT.
