A STORY OF COURAGE

In order to prove that Turkish pilots' followed the developments in the world, Istanbul-Cairo Air Campaign was organized on the 8th of February, 1914.

In spite of the bad weather conditions on the 8th of February, Captain Fethi Bey and his co-pilot Sadık Bey made a successful flight and arrived in Damascus on the 24th of February. On the 27th of February, they left Damascus for Jerusalem; however their plane was fell down and the two pilots were martyred.

The second team, Nuri Bey and his co-pilot İsmail Hakkı Bey who started the flight at the same day, arrived in Haifa on the 9th of March and while leaving Haifa next day their plane could not rise enough and fell into the sea. Nuri Bey became a martyr too. İsmail Hakkı Bey was rescued by the help of people.

Upon the instructions of Enver Pasha, the Minister of National Defence, a plane which took off from Istanbul on the 6th of March, could only reach up to Edremit. To complete the Cairo Campaign starting from Haifa, a new plane which was purchased by the people of Edremit arrived in Cairo.

The Cairo Expedition of 1914 which had been supported with great cheer both in our country and Middle-East countries 87 years ago, has now been taken as a project called "GOLDEN WINGS" (A Story of Courage) by the official channel of the Republic of Turkey, Turkish Radio and Television Corporation and Headquarters of Turkish Air Forces and the expedition was repeated between May 15th-June 18th, 2001.
