The origin of football can be found in every corner of geography and history. The Chinese, Japanese, Egyptians and Assyrians played ball games long before our era. Originating from traditional ball games, modern football was born in the 19th century in England.

Football is one of the rare elements and perhaps the only one, of a global culture, that transgresses the boundary lines between different regions, nations and generations. The reason why football is so fascinating is that by its very structure it symbolizes an ideal model of life in a group; it tells us something important about the common destiny of mankind.

Over a century, football became a worldwide passion and a kind of universal activity. As the number of international competitions increased over this period, The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in Paris on the 21st of May 1904. FIFA's mission is to ensure that the positive image of football is always maintained throughout the world.

The FIFA World Cup is the biggest sporting event on earth. Every four years, the world holds its breath as the teams compete for the gold trophy.

The first World Cup final took place in Uruguay in 1930 and became a remarkable success, both in a sporting and financial sense. Since 1930, the 16 tournaments have had only seven different winners. Brazil have won it four times, while Germany and Italy have won it three times each.

This is the third time that Turkey has been in the final competitions in 2002. And Turkey was 3^rd of the World Cup.

Turkey had the right of playing in the World Cup final competitions 2 times.  However in 1950, Turkey decided not to take place in the finals as it would be very expensive to participate. In 1954 our country participated in the finals by lots.

The main focus of the FIFA World Cup remains the same: the glistening golden trophy, which is the embodiment of every footballer's ambition.
